Following my previous post on my DIY Headboard project that my husband and I worked on, I wanted to share other ways we use DIY in our house. I'm a big believer in taking old furniture and items, restoring them, and using them to decorate once again. For me I actually like things to look old, so thats what I tend to go for.
My headboard and bedding is all new ( DIY HERE), but the gorgeous white candelabras hanging on the sides were found at an antique auction. My husband accidentally bid on them because he thought I wanted them...and won. Since they were a horrible gold bronze tacky color, which I gave new life to with a can of white spray paint and silver candle sticks. The perfect accent to our beautiful bed.
I love setting things on pretty trays. Above you can see this decorative serving tray that I found at a Good Will, used to hold my candles. I can easily move this from room to room for some gorgeous candle light.
This is a special space that goes back generations into my family. My mom had this huge old trunk sitting in the corner of her room and I asked if I could have it for a coffee table. She was more then happy to get it out of the corner of her room, and I found out that it was a bit to large for a coffee table haha! So Instead I placed it on the wall in the living room for a cute little decorative table. It was the trunk of my Great-Great-Great-Grandma, who used it to carry her belongings while traveling. Now it shares a special spot on display in our living room. Behind it I have an old door from our friends house which they replaced, naturally I asked if I could have it. Haha, one mans junk is another mans treasure. And the really freaking awesome pin-up book was a gift from my Uncle...making it the largest "coffee table" display book ever. I could probably kill a wild buffalo with it! Add some flowers and candles and its prefect!
The last thing I wanted to share with you is something we worked on a while ago, but still something I wanted to share. It was an old buffet table/hutch which we completely redid with a white washed kind of textured finish. Making it old and distressed looking. I changed the old ugly hardware with some gorgeous knobs I found at Hobby Lobby and Anthropology. We decided to make it our TV table which fits perfectly in the corner of our living room.
I'm always on the lookout for great furniture that is perfect as is, or could use a little TLC. Some of my favorite things have been diamonds in the dirt. Clean them up and you have a gorgeous featured piece or accent decor. What amazing things have you discovered and turned into house decor??? Share them with me and please tag me if you post them to instagram @alexsismae!
