It's A 10: Miracle Leave-In

Tired of your hair feeling like a Arabian drought lacking moisture, softness, and always full of tangles? I had the same issues with my long bra-length hair. I use professional brand hair products with some of the best ingredients, heat protectant, and a deep conditioning treatment every couple of weeks. Even after all that I still seem to have slightly dry tangled hair. Some people have dry hair because of shampooing it too much, the color/highlights removing natural oils, harsh shampoo/conditioner, not using anything to protect your hair from hot-tools, using hot-tools on a really high heat temperature, the length, not cutting it often enough, the list goes on and on. Some people even have dry hair because their hair is just naturally dry.

So how can we counteract those challenges with something easy that will get you real results worthy of a try? Let me introduce you to an amazing line called "It's A 10!" I'm usually a Paul Mitchell hair care junkie, so this is a big thing for me to say I absolutely endorse this product with a 10 out of 10 score! Before I ventured into working at a salon I worked at a professional beauty supply store. There are many products that we sell benefiting all the salons in our area, so you get to know a lot of brands and their ingredients. We also were given many real size samples of new products or products that a brand would like to push. Out of those products I received one called: It's A 10 Miracle Leave in Plus Keratin. So I went home and tried it out, most products I got as a sample I didn't really care for...but this one has changed my hair forever.

Like the picture above it takes care of all the hair challenges we have whether it's manageability, heat, shine, hydration and all the other things listed. It's great to have an all-in-one product so you don't feel like your layering twenty different things in your hair. Because of the keratin, amino acids, and protein your hair gets infused with it's much needed strength ALL day long. The miracle conditioning ingredients lock in moisture making your hair manageable so you can brush without the stress of tangles! It's made by seasoned professional beauty stylists with a hands-on approach and personal dedication which brings the power, flexibility, and simplicity of the It’s a 10 line into fine salons around the world. This product is sold only by professional salons, and only guaranteed when sold by a salon.

Click HERE to find a salon near you and give the It's A 10 brand a chance, you might just fall in love with the products and your hair!

Fashion Show- Victoria Pennington

I am so excited to announce that the salon I work at, Gray Premier Salon, will be featured for the ribbon cutting and fashion show on January 28th for Victoria Pennington's Model and Talent Agency!

Victoria Pennington’s modeling career began at 14 years old, after being discovered as a fresh face by a photographer one afternoon at a local Mall.  Later at the age of 15 she would meet the famed photographer Beth Boldt  (Boldt has discovered and developed notable models and celebrities Ashton Kutcher and Naomi Campbell).  Making headlines in Huntsville, AL as a promising young model, Victoria was then signed with Fashion Models , Milan and Next Models,INew York. She later went to Italy and landed herself a spot on the European reality show "Big Brother Italy." Soon all of Italy came to love this beautiful southern gal, and she was even given her own travel show called "On the Road." Victoria is now back in America sharing her knowledge with the newest up and coming models through her Modeling Agency.

For this fashion show we will be painting the models up with a gorgeous over the top silver smokey eye along with the always popular nude lip and sleek hair. Thanks to TIGI makeup we will be able to create a dramatic layered look that will be flawless even in the harshest lights. Huntsville's local designers will clothe them in all the latest trends, perfect for a fashionista's wardrobe. The models will be stomping the runway looking like they just walked out of Milan's Fashion Week!

Don't forget to check back soon and I will post pictures of our work, the runway, and hopefully a video of the fashion show!

Rope Curls-Off Duty Model

When Taylor Swift first started her journey into the music world the first thing we noticed, other than her voice, were her beautiful curls. She has this girl next store kind of wavy curly blonde style that everyone aspired to have. After a few years into her career we now see that her curls have evolved into a polished look achieved with the help of a friendly curling iron.

Then we have beauties like our UK star Fearne Cotton rocking an effortless waved curl that has more of a relaxed vibe. She isn't shy to the winds of change when it comes to her hair, so to see her with this soft and romantic multi-tonal style with a pinup twist we know that this curl works on a range of personalities.

Let me introduce you to the mystical rope curl. I get so many woman that have no idea that this curl is as simple as your spiral curl. Maybe even easier. The only difference between the two is:

-the spiral curl is curled inside the clip of your iron
-the rope curl is wrapped around your iron

Depending on the size of your iron and size of your sections, depicts the look of your finished style. The smaller tighter irons get you Taylor's style, whereas a larger looser irons produce a Fearne style. You will see special tools called curl wands, they are like your curling iron only without the clip to hold your hair. Honestly, you can use your regular iron so don't worry about buying another tool. It may take a try or two to find out what size will get your the curl you like best, so I made a tutorial with a small and large iron. Please watch my tutorial, and I will teach you how to create glamorous modern curls!

Swept Back Curls into a Bun

Hello beautiful,
To your left is a picture of my version of Jessica Alba's hairstyle: swept back curls going into a messy bun. A little while ago I attempted this look and had so many people ask me how I did it, so I am sharing it with you now!

Quiet honestly, it only takes about 15-20 minutes to create this style. It's a very easy look and I hope this simplifies the style and allows you yet another fun way to wear your hair!

Revlon Airbrush Foundation

I was watching TV on my day off and a Revlon commercial played across the screen. Usually I don't tend to use Revlon, I don't know why it just isn't one of my "go to" products. But when I saw beautiful Emma Stone's face, I decided not to flip the channel.  Usually I see older celebrities encompass the Revlon world so my brian automatically assumes it's an older generation product. With Emma, I couldn't help but to see what she would endorse with Revlon. Come to find out, it's a foundation called Photo-ready Airbrush Moose Makeup. Of course I'm interested at the though of an airbrush affect and lightweight moose feel. I adore makeup that is smooth with a light as air feel so I'm not covering up everything, it just feel's so unnatural when products layer on your skin. Next to feeling and looking unnatural, it's not good for your skin if it's covered with thick goock all the time. Our skin actually breathes...and if you wear a heavy foundation like MAC Long-wear Foundation on a day to day basis you are actually causing your skin to have lack of oxygen and moisture.

I tested out Revlon's new foundation which I purchased for 12$ at Target, and wasn't quite sure of the overall effect at first. Since I'm used to using a tinted moisturizer which gives very light coverage, I had to wear it the whole day in order to see my skin in different lights and see it's lasting power. I asked my friends at the salon if they felt my foundation looked comparably different (too thick or unnatural blend) then the kind I'm usually wearing. They answered no, and I would have to agree with them. I quite like the foundation and really liked the results throughout the day. I would recommend it's primer for those who have naturally oily skin, my T-zone (forehead & nose) had a slight sheen.

Alright, so what is so great about this airbrush moose foundation? It's a light as air foundation that provides you with a flawless finish in every light, in person or on camera. The whipped texture allows you to blend seamlessly for undetectable coverage, leaving you with a smooth porless complexion. This formulas photo-chromatic pigments bend and reflect light to minimize flaws, leaving you with perfectly airbrushed skin- in any light. It is oil free and fragrance free.

Whether you wear foundation every day or just on special occasions, Revlon's new foundation is one to try! If you have any comments please post them, or you can email me at:

TIPS:
-Use fingers, and blend from the middle of your face outward.
-If you tend to have oily skin, use Revlon's Photo Ready Perfecting Primer

Hydration for Dry Skin!

Winter likes to welcome us with intense weather, altering our body into the unusual. Our hair is a frizz ball static cling mess, our clothes layer up, and among other things our skin resembles a reptilian desert. Because I work at a hair salon my hands are always in detergents, whether it's shampoo's or washing out color bowls, thus my hands suffer from depleted moisture which in turn creates my dry hands. I know that many of you are going through the same thing, from different reasons, and need a helping aid to soothe the irritating dryness. A while ago I bought my husband Shane some Burt's Bees products because my mom always loved the brand, and we used them at home. Shane is an electrician and has the working mans hands that are beat up and in need of some help. Knowing that a brand is committed and that their products do as they say is always a great reason to try their line. So I purchased Burt's Bees: Almond Milk Beeswax Hand Creme. I let my husband try it out, and came to find that unlike regular lotion, this hand creme is a thick super hydrating formula with rich ingredients to rejuvenate skin. It uses Sweet Almond Oil and Vitamin E to hydrate and shield your hard working skin. Then it seals and conditions your skin with bees wax. With it's subtle but sweet natural fragrance, you can give your hands it's much deserved  help. You can use it on your knees, elbows, hands, feet , wherever you have dry skin asking for relief. Now I use it on my hands to counteract the harsh detergents used in my daily life. I absolutely love my Beeswax hand creme and I won't go another winter without it! You can find Burt's Bees at most drugstores and beauty stores (Wamart, Target, Ulta...) for around 9$. But don't take my word for it, go try it out for yourself and let me know how you feel about this hand creme! I promise you wont be disappointed.

  • bobby pins
  • two rubber hair bands
  • hair spray
  • and a brush
I hope you enjoy this tutorial and if you have any questions you can post a comment or email me at todieforblog@yahoo.com

Favorite Shadow's

Hello Beautiful!
It's hard to find a shadow brand that is vibrant and holds true to the bright pigment it displays. Then if you find a good shadow, you look at the price tag...YIKES! Some times our makeup can be so costly we have to save up just to purchase it. I would like to share with you what eyeshadow I use on a regular basis that are cost conscious, and so when I post a tutorial you can follow along.

First in my video review I will talk about the Manly 120 Palette. I absolutely love this brand because of the highly pigmented color, it's rage in tones, shimmer/matte,  and most of all the 20$ price. You can't get better then this. It's been said that Manly shadows are as pigmented as MAC shadows. Which is a huge compliment since MAC is a leading brand in the makeup world.
My next review is on Victoria's Secret Loose Eyeshadow. This eyeshadow is anything but dull, you get a shower of shimmer to your eyes with these loose shadows. It's a highly pigmented shadow, with a intense pop of color. I love how you can layer and infuse this shadow with others to create an array of possibilities! The price ranges from 12$-15$.

Natural Beach Waves-No HEAT!

Hello beautiful!
All of us are in need of a quick but lovely way to wear our hair without heat or a big fuss. I have tried the sock bun and twist bun hoping for an overnight miracle to curly wavy beach hair. But unfortunately both ended in a super curly frizzy explosion, and a wet limp downfall. As a professional stylist that can be pretty frustrating, after all we should know how to do this right? So I found a different way to get real results in as little as 15 minutes preparation time! In my tutorial I have demonstrated how to use the simple french twist, made into a halo, to have natural looking beach waves. I hope you enjoy and if you have any questions or comments, post them here or email me at: todieforblog@yahoo.com

Get Organized!

Woman have a lot of makeup and we need a way to store it all. One of the biggest problem I have is trying to keep all my makeup and hair stuff from gravitating ALL over the room. Everything will be spread out across the bathroom, or office where I usually get ready. Then when my products and tools are everywhere...my morning turns into a rush as I try to find what I need and where it is. If your like me, you already don't have enough time in the morning, so to run around your house looking for that one thing in which you thought you knew where it was...is extremely frustrating! If your on the verge of a morning madness spasm, let me share some ideas with you for "Do It Yourself" organizers that help hair/makeup divas like us keep it together!

A great way to get organized is with a small convenient drawer unit. In the picture to the left is what I use. I love that it has three drawers; one for my base makeup, one for my eye makeup, and one for my brushes. It allows to to grab what I need, then throw it back in the drawer so it won't get scattered across my desk. You can find this at a Walmart or Target for around 10$.

How awesome is this magnetic framed board used for placing your makeup up on. This is a cute design especially for a room with not much counter space. All you need are a few simple things, most can be found at Goodwill or a Salvation Army for around 10$! Click here for the website how-to.

Get yourself a tackle box from Walmart for 5$ and you've got an awesome storage box for all your rubber bands, bobby pins, hair pins, pin curl clips, and much more. It's so nice to have all my little things that can get lost and unmanageable in this organized container so when I need a specific thing, I can find it in it's own little spot and not mixed in with a gazillon other things.

Need an easy way to travel with your makeup/hair products? Get yourself a clear pencil case for $1 at the Dollar Store or Walmart! What's so great about this travel organizer is that it's clear which means; if you travel on an airplane you wont have to worry about security digging through your bag or placing your liquids in a ziplock baggie, and because it's transparent you can find what you need with ease.

Let's clean up our beauty space and create a stress free morning with our organizers! I can't say how much this has helped me get ready and be able to find where my things are. Enjoy your relaxed mornings :)

Base Makeup- The Basics

Hello beautiful YOU! Are you ready to apply a flawless makeup application? Sure, but how do you start and what do you need...and what do you need to know? This sounds like a question I was asked recently by a friend:
"How do I find the right color and kind of foundation? And when I do, how do I cover blemishes and apply my foundation?"
As well as, " I have a very girly 12 year old who is beginning to experiment with makeup, what is the best way to introduce her to the makeup world?"
Honestly, picking the right foundation for your skin can be a confusing whirlwind. I recommend buying your foundation from a department store or beauty store like Ulta, Macy's, or Sephora. Unlike buying your makeup from a local drugstore, you can test it before you purchase. If you do buy make-up from a drugstore make sure that you buy from a liberal return store (like Rite Aid).

Here are some tips on how to dodge the scary orange face, spotty coverage, or cake-face followed by my tutorial on how to apply foundation at the end of this page.
What type of foundation to choose?
  •  Liquid foundations are wonderful because they are easy to apply and are very natural looking. Liquid foundations offer medium-maximium coverage. They are well suited for dry skin types because of the high moisture content. Look for liquid foundations that are oil free.
  •  Cream foundations offer excellent coverage that is milky and flawless. Cream foundations come in a compact or stick that are convenient and quick to apply. Cream foundations are so versatile they can be used as a corrector. With a high moisture content, the cream foundation is a perfect choice for dry skin. It's also great for people with redness and acne. Look for creams that contain moisturizer for a smooth finish.
  •  Powder foundation can be found in a loose powder form or in a compressed powder form. Powders are often used as a quick foundation fix for a face that needs just a slight evening out or to set the makeup already in place. It is an excellent choice for oily skin or for makeup in high humidity. Powder foundation is also available in a cream to powder form. This type of foundation combines the smoothness and flawless coverage of a cream with the fast drying and setting of a powder. It is a terrific foundation for someone with combination skin or someone with time restrictions.
  • Tinted moisturizers give your complexion a breathable sheer coverage that glows allowing your skin look fresh and awake. This is perfect for a day-to-day wear because of how light the formula is, giving your skin room to breathe. Look for tinted moisturizers that contain vitamins and aloe which will improves skin's elasticity and hydrates. Since it is a "tinted moisturizer", it has just enough coverage to even out skin tone and moisturize through-out your day creating a glowing complexion with a smooth finish. No need for a moisturizer or SPF to go along with your foundation, because you have it all with a tinted moisturizer! This is great for dry, oily, and combination skin because of it's high moisture content and vitamins.

How to find your fit:
  1.  Before you pick the formula, you need to find out the right formulation for your skin. If you're oily, look for ones with words like "oil-free," "oil-control" or "mattifying" on the bottle. Do you have dry skin? Go for moisturizing foundations with "hydrating" or "moisture-rich" wording on the bottle. Foundations containing glycerin glide on easily. For combination skin, determine if you're more oily or dry and go from there. Cream-to-powder bases work great for combination skin. Mineral foundations work well on all skin types, especially sensitive skin.
  2.  Consider if you want a light or medium-coverage. If you have good skin, but want to even out a few red or blotchy areas, consider a light coverage. For women with really uneven skin tone or blemishes, consider a medium-coverage foundation. Some women swear by mineral foundations, so you might want to try these out as well. Also, if you are environmentally aware, check out the few but amazing organic brands.

Testing Out Make-up at the Counter:
  1.  Get ready to bare it all and go to the makeup counter with a clean face. It is fine to wear eye makeup or lipgloss, even moisturizer on your face, remember not to show up already wearing foundation so you get to see the real results of the products you will test.
  2.  Select a few colors that seem close to your natural skin tone. Go for the yellow-based foundations which look most natural on all skin tones. However, if you're very fair, try a pink, cooler shade, if your darker go for an olive shade.
  3.  Apply a stroke of up to three colors on your neck or chest. This is the best place because when you apply your makeup it will blend beautifully creating a natural flow. The one that disappears or blends is the right shade. Make sure you look at the tests -- near a window. Ask to borrow a hand mirror and stand near a doorway, or step outside, to see which foundation looks best in the natural light. The right shade is one that you can't see as it blends in so well. If you are purchasing from a drugstore, take a couple bottles to a doorway, hold them up to your neck and see which one matches the best or if you have a favorite shade you want to match, match the colors of the bottles, never the swatch on the display.
  4.  Once you've bought the foundation, take it home and try it out throughout your day. If you don't like it you can return it.

What kind of Concealer?
Now that we have the foundation figured out, lets move on to concealer. When choosing a concealer, you should think about both consistency and color. If you are covering major under-eye circles, blemishes, or dark spots you're going to want a concealer that provides major coverage. The editors of Allure's "Confessions of a Beauty Editor" suggest testing consistency by dabbing concealer on the blue veins on the inside of your wrist. Again, the color should be slightly lighter than your foundation. If you go too light, you risk looking like a raccoon. Just like you have to switch up your foundation though seasons, you may need a lighter concealer shade in winter than you would in summer.
When to use Powder?
If you use a liquid or cream foundation you need to set it with powder to create a matte finish which keeps your foundation in place. Powder also allows your face makeup to blend smoothly. I love loose powders because they add just enough to set your makeup without creating a cake face look. Use the same method to find your shade as you did with your foundation; you can even use your foundation bottle and compare them to a powder. Flawless fresh skin is not just for models or photoshop, you can have it too as long as you know what tools to use.
Yes, my makeup products are my tools! Without the proper tools we would be lost on how to apply our makeup. I hope this is a big help to solve the strategy for finding the perfect base makeup. Enjoy watching my video tutorial and learn how I apply foundation, concealer, and powder. Experiment, and if you have any questions please comment or send me an email!
