Mascara Confusion

Walking into any store most of us woman naturally gravitate towards the makeup department without even really needing any specific thing. Why do we do that? Because there are SO many new things; makeup that promises to reduce wrinkles, makeup that is hydrating, makeup that is organic, makeup that matches your skin's id, makeup that promises to grow your lashes... there is so many that we float from brand to brand looking for the most promising and interesting thing to try.  I specifically find an issue with what brand of mascara to use.

My first realization is, DON'T WATCH THE COMMERCIALS!!! Every Mascara commercial is done using photoshop, fake-lashes, and optical illusions (yes even the ones who say no false lashes needed like Maybelline's Falsies Mascara). It's unrealistic and honestly, false advertisement in my opinion. Put a girl on there with REAL lashes and show me what it does, that will make me very interested. Because not all of us want to deal with putting on false lashes every single day, I know I don't!

Second, what are your lashes like? Depending on your answer is how I would respond to what brand will work best for you. I think the most important, and overlooked issue we have is not the mascara its self but the brush we apply it with. Yes we can get into all the lengthening, volumising, thickening formulas, but with out the correct brush/formula combination there is really no point. It would be like trying to put your powder on with a eyeshadow brush, there both makeup brushes but with sole purposes.  So let me show you the different brushes, and mascaras I would recommend based on your natural lashes.

Medium/thin lashes, with intent to be clean and separated. Most girls I know have a regular thickness in lashes but don't want there lashes to be over-applied and chunk together. My answer to that would be Cover Girls's new LashBlast Fusion MascaraExperience COVERGIRL's first ever volume + length mascara! The fiberstretch formula and over sized brush make every little lash bigger, fuller, longer-looking, and more dramatic. Also available in Water Resistant! This formula creates a natural looking defined lash. Take a look at the brush, it's a finely distributed shorter length bristle giving you more control and sweeping your lashes with intent to have every lash standing on its own maximum length. This is my current mascara and probably most successful formula I've ever tried! You can do 3-4 layers without getting a clumpy lashline! This mascara takes the #1 vote on most reviews! People always ask me how I get my lashes so long, and my conclusion is that other mascaras are very heavy and use a HUGE thick brush (which makes it hard for your lashes to get in the brush to pull them and cover each one, rather then sweep the outside of it barely even touching all my lashes) since they try to give you a "thicker lash". Which in theory weighed down my lashes so by the time I walked out of the house they drooped instead of reaching for the sky. Not so fun.

Thick/thin short lashes, with intent to be dramatic. For you girls who love the thick mascara look I would
recommend Maybellines Volume Express Falsies Mascara. Their most dramatic false lash fab volume! Patented Spoon brush reaches lashes from corner-to-corner, while Black Drama formula fills in every gap. My favorite thing about this mascara is the scoop brush! The curved angle goes around to reach each lash and literally scoops them up up and away, all your lashes will be fully saturated with its thickening formula. Falsies is contact lens safe and Ophthalmologist tested.  Washable; also available in waterproof formula. This is one of my favorite mascaras for the glamorous Kardashian style.

Thick/medium/thin lashes, eye color enhance. The newest way to enhance your eyes is with Cover Girls Exact Eyelights mascara. Get noticeably brighter eyes with Exact Eyelights Eye-Brightening Mascara! Light-reflecting metallics and a hint of tint bring out your blues, browns, hazels, and greens, while the no-clump brush helps define lashes. You will love the formula and brush as you apply a smooth, clean, defined look.

Thin lashes, needing a boost! Pump your lashes up with Maybelline's Volum' Express the Classic! It delivers up to 3X the volume instantly for the fastest clump-free volume. With it's Anti-Clump Curved Brush and volume-building express formula quickly thickens your lashes without clumps or globs. As you can tell I'm a huge fan of the scoop brush. I just really like that you don't have to work at getting beautiful luscious lashes with this brush because the brush gets it done! This was the first mascara I tried with this brush and I've been hooked ever since!

Hopefully this clears up the confusion and help get a to fit your lifestyle and look. I know how it feels to purchase a different mascara every time trying to nail the best fit. So give these a try and let me know how they work out for you :)

P.S.
I was recently ask this question,

"Alexsis, what can you do about mascara that always smudges underneath? I have even used waterproof but my daughter and I always have dark smudges!"

I had that same problem a little while ago! I tried waterproof mascara just like she did and still had dark smudges. I found out that my skin, in combination to my foundation was creating an oily surface which my lashes rubbed against. As we know oil makes most makeup come off, so I had to switch my foundation, I was using Smashbox but now I'm using Benefit tinted moisturizer which doesn't smudge to dark spots! If you have the same problem try switching up your foundation or use a skin primer!

Breakouts: On-the-spot HELP!

Everyone has been a victim to an acne breakout. Whether it was just one white-head that popped up before your senior pictures...or a mini army of them attacking your face before your wedding day, we all know how if feels. Some of us will find it's hereditary that our skin breaks out, for others it can be a hormone or puberty issue.  I was held captive by an embarrassing skin complexion in my teenage years and still deal with breakouts to this day! I found out that eating healthy, drinking LOTS of water, and cleansing my face properly didn't always solve the problem...because adolescent acne is hereditary in my family. Rather then trying to cover up the problem, adding pounds of makeup to my skin, I decide to fight it. If you've seen it,  I have tried it. I went through almost every acne treatment I could get my hands onto. My dad even took me to a Skin Specialist in California who works with Miss America and beauty pageant girls, her products put me though a long regimen that instead of treating my acne, made it flare up and become worse. I felt defeated and doomed to deal with a dotted face for the rest off my life.

So after trying all that stuff, I was introduced to Neutrogena's On-the-spot Acne Treatment, (which got Editor's Choice Award from Allure Beauty Magazine). This on-the-spot acne treatment has the perfect amount of Benzoyl Peroxide, the hardworking pimple fighter, in a moderate, 2.5 percent solution. Just enough to clear up your emishes, but not so much that skin is left red, dry or irritated. I tried other treatments that either made the breakout worse (Proactive), or dried my skin out so bad that I felt like a snake molting. Neutrogena's treatment goes down deep in the pores to kill the acne bacteria that causes pimple's and helps to stop new ones from showing their evil heads. On-the-spot works hour after hour to give long-lasting treatment and protection. You can wear this after you cleanse, and even under your foundation.

This treatment is so effective and easy. All you have to do is wash your face with a gentle cleanser, pat face dry, place a small amount onto your finger tip, and dap onto the problem spot. Don't use this all over your face, this is an "On-the-spot" treatment so treat only the spots you know there's a pimple. I put it on if I feel a pimple about to surface,  and it usually take me only two days to see my blemish disappear! It's gone before it even know's it. Once you get it under control you will see that your face will clear up and your acne will become a minute problem, allowing you to focus on gorgeous skin and more importantly a beautiful reflection which God blessed you with.

Now I'm set free from the problem of how I will handle my skin and what to do during a breakout. If your ready to fight against acne breakout's I suggest you try this formula that has changed my life!!! For a price of around $6, it's well worth the challenge. Let me know how this works for you!

Yarn Braid

This is one out of the many reasons of why hair is an amazing canvas to create things! Here is my version of the yarn braid, which I wore today!!! In this braid I used coral, white, and yellow strands of yarn. I also played up my eye with a black slightly winged eyeliner on the top lash-line and a fun coral color on the bottom lash-line.

Try it out and have fun :)

Become an ANGEL!

Have you ever walked by Victoria's Secret or watched their Runway show and thought, "Gosh those girls are so skinny and sexy!" Yep, me too! As I watched movies and read magazines, I saw big loose curls with middle parts and a 70'ish feel. But with my curling iron all I got were spiral bouncy curls. We all want in on the darn Victoria's Secret don't we! After many failed attempts I finally got my answer and here it is!

The best investment I've made are my 1-1 1/2" curling irons from Hot Tools. The bigger the iron, the larger your curls will be. And it all depends on your hair length. (It's really hard to get the nice curls with shorter hair, so for around shoulder length hair and shorter I recommend the 1" iron, and for longer then shoulder length hair I recommend the 1 1/4" iron. ) Here are a few great things about these irons :

  • Advanced Ceramic Tourmaline styling surface
  • Soft-Grip™ textured handle
  • Advanced Pulse Technology® for Gets Hot...Stays Hot™ performance
  • Temperatures up to 430° F (220° C)
  • Variable heat settings with built-in rheostat control
  • Extra high heat
  • Fast heat-up
  • Heavy-duty long-life heating element
  • Foldaway safety stand
  • Extra-long thumb grip and powerful spring clamp(Spring irons)
If your wondering what the Ceramic Tourmaline (CT) surface is, let me explain it. The CT creates even heat distribution so that your entire strand is heated and there aren't any extreme hot spots that can create a lot of damage to your hair. Ceramic plates distribute high ions to the hair to prevent excessive damage. According to Missiko, ceramic flat irons may even repair damaged hair follicles. The ceramic formula lasts a lot longer too.

Now days we have different hot tools in which we use constantly. I see too many people that have no idea of the damaging effects that heat can do to your hair, split ends and breakage rule their hair and create a frizzy unhealthy look. So protect your hair and investment by ALWAYS using a thermal styling protectant. Try Redkens Spray Starch #15 Heat Memory Styler, $14. Redken’s exclusive Bonding System transports potato starch extract to help protect against heat and cuticle loss . It mimics the pattern of heat appliances by “starching in” long-lasting memory. Leaving hair shiny, clean feeling and flexible. It also helps protect hair from heat and eliminate static. With a non-stick, clean formula won’t build-up on heat appliances, you'll love this product for styling your curls.

The next thing we need is a good hairspray to keep our curls in place. Our salon favorite is Redkens Fashion Work #12. This aerosol is a versatile spray for working, shaping and finishing styles. Its fast-drying, with a fine mist and contains vitamins C and E to protect hair and help prevent color fade! You can find it at your local salon for around $17. (We love this spray because of the flexibility and how you can work with it before setting your style.)

Or you can use TRESemme's TRES Two Ultra Fine Mist hair spray with a level hold of #3 and cost of around $4. It's a flexible-hold spray that keeps hair in place and goes on dry, thanks to its water-free formula. This brushable spray gives you softness (not stiffness) for a light, natural hold. Don't like your first attempt? Brush it out and start over (no kidding). Perfect for days when you need staying power but not extreme hold. It refuses to weigh hair down and is resistant to frizz and humidity for 24 hours.

Now that we have the products down, lets get started on curling your hair. Watch this video tutorial :)

Get ready to find your inner Angel, You'll be rocking a sexy soft curl in no time!

Ready, Set, Dip!

Hello Beautiful Nails!

Ok so I know you know about all the designs that you can get at the local nail shop. From air brush effects to miniature paintings to intricate designs, our nail technician can do some pretty amazing things! But not very many have caught onto the newest fad to nail design... MARBLING!

Ok don't freak out, I was just as excited when I fount out about this stellar way to polish your nails! Let me explain what the process and how you can achieve this look AT HOME!

Before you do anything you need these things below.
  1. Apply your base coat as usual and one coat of another polish. You want most of your nail color to come from the marbling, but having a colored base often fills in the gaps and results in a brighter manicure.
  2. Apply clear tape around the tips of your fingers. This is the most time consuming step but it is worth it when you are finished as there is less excess polish. There is some debate as to whether applying oil or vaseline around your nail works the same way, but I find tape much easier to remove.
  3. Fill your disposable cup up with lukewarm water 90% of the way to the rim. Carefully drip a drop of nail polish (China Glaze works really well) into the water. Repeat with multiple colors to create a bulls eye effect.
  4. With a pin or toothpick, working quite quickly, swirl the polish to create the desired marble effect.
  5. Place your nail facing down into the water where you want the design to appear. It is imperative that you keep your nail under water or else the design may shift.
  6. With your toothpick or pin, clear away the excess polish from the water. It should pull away easily after a few seconds.
  7. Repeat with all of your nails, remove the tape, and apply topcoat as usual. Note, you may see water droplets trapped under the polish. Most of these will even out with the application of topcoat.

I had so much fun learning how to master this effect. It might take a few tries but don't be frustrated because you'll get it! Just keep trying and play with different designs with your toothpick. Have fun :)

                                Braids

Ever find yourself styling your hair the same way, day after day. Some times we don't have enough time to curl our hair or take the time to flat iron every inch of our thick unruly locks. So we throw it up in a pony tail or under a hat. Then of course we don't want anyone to see us and we think about how our hair looks all day long and how we wish we had time to fix it like that girl who looks so cute every day!

My answer to that problem is learn how to braid your own hair. We see braids in all shapes, sizes, patterns, and some even with other things weaved in! Braids are on little girls and celebrities walking down Red Carpet events. On the left you'll see Brittany Snow rocking the elegant but very simple loose 3 strand braid. I know what your thinking, well she can rock it she has a hair artist that creates the most beautiful hairstyles for movie stars all the time. When actually this is the simplest braid of them all, and can definitely be done by you on your own hair. All you have to do is learn how to 3strand braid and then it will take you all of 5 minutes to style your hair in the morning!

So this is your first test, go to http://youtu.be/32vYs9wKXE8 and master the 3 strand french braid. This braid is basically the foundation for all the other braids you will ever learn and really helps with the placement of your hands and how much tension you need to have on the hair. When you feel like you've mastered it, play around with it! Wear it messy, wear it neat. Pull some of the strands out a bit, then wear it out! I promise you that you will get compliments and not feel like your wearing a boring style day to day.

Then I want you to get brave! Yes, every girl has the right to be a fashionista! To your right is a really neat and creative idea on how to glamorize your hair at a cost effective and really fun way. First you need a few pieces of yarn (make sure you get colors that can be seen in your hair and compliment the color of your outfit) and double them so they are twice the length of your hair. Then section off the top, from the top of your ears up. Take out strands of your hair and near the middle of the yarn tie the yarn to your hair. Repeat this as many times as you want. Next pull down the top part we had section off. Then lightly brush the top so you don't have flyaway hairs. Then bring all your hair to one side and 3strand braid it. Now you are ready for a day with amazing hair that everyone will be asking how you did that! Be brave with your hair and have fun! After all boring hair is, well, boring!

Define Your Eyes

Among the many things we can do with makeup your eyeliner can make a define impression! From the Audrey Hepburn winged line, to the modern full-eyed line, we can all agree there is a variety and look for our liner. This picture up top displays a few lines that I think are worth the try!

But what liner works best?

There are a gazillion different eyeliners on the market ranging in price and formulas. Depending on how and where you where your makeup is placed, is the key to knowing which liner will work best for you and where to put it. So let become familiar with the formulas of eyeliner and where to wear it.

First you have your liner pencil. This is the most commonly known and used form of eyeliner. You can get it in a range of colors with prices ranging from 1$ on up. It's best used on the upper lash line, lower lash line, waterline, and is smudged into a soft line. On the Best In Beauty 2011 charts from In Style magazine, MAC Eye Kohl is $15, and voted #1 pencil! These creamy pencils trace precise lines without tugging on delicate skin. In addition, the soft formula can be artfully smudged for instant attitude—and once it sets, it never wanders. If your looking for a drugstore brand, try L'Oreal's Le Kohl Expressive Eyes Eyeliner. Get the look that makes a statement, even the $9 price makes a statement!

Second we have the gel liners. Best in Beauty 2008 charts vote Bobby Brown Long-Wear gel liner #1!The texture of this waterproof durable formula glides on like a liquid liner, gives you the same bold definition, but won't run when you tear up from a good laugh. "The consistency is the perfect mix of fluidity and opacity—and it lasts!" This is a makeup artists favorite choice because of how well gel liners stay where they are told :) $21. If your looking for an gel liner that easier on your wallet, try Maybellines Eye-Studio Lasting Drama Gel Liner. With intense long lasting color and a $10 price, you'll be happy with this comparison!

Third is the sleek liquid eyeliner. Voted best Liquid Liner at the salon I work at, it will make your eyes a masterpiece. Best used on top lash line, I wouldn't recommend to use this on your lower lash line or waterline. True, smudge-resistant colors with the perfect control tip. This product has classic liquid liner packaging of a small pot with a brush. It's great for putting a line in a specific place, and it stays put for hours. Because of the thin tip applicator, you have to ability to create thin to chunky lines and thin lines. Get this at a local salon for $18. If you would like to try the drugstore brand which was voted #1 eyeliner for The Worlds Best by Elle magazine, get Cover Girls Line Exact Liquid Liner. At the price of $7 you'll get a compact, easy-to-hold, high-precision liquid eyeliner pen has a smudge-proof, fast-drying formula that glides on to create fine or bold lines without fuss, for looks that last all day.

So whatever your life calls for, there is a liner. Give these a try and I promise you that you'll love your liner :) Now go practice and define those beautiful eyes!

Argan Oil, is it really Liquid Gold?

So what is all this hype about Argan Oil?

Argan oil is an oil produced from the kernels of the argan tree, endemic to Morocco, that is valued for its nutritive, cosmetic and numerous medicinal properties. This oil once grew in many parts of the world but now is only found in the Moroccan United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) protected forest making it the rarest oil in the world. Its grown organically, in organic certified fertilizer giving us the highest quality oil. All argan sold today is produced by a women's cooperative that shares the profits among the local women of the Berber tribe. The cooperative has established an ecosystem reforestation project so that the supply of argan oil will not run out and the income that is currently supporting the women will not disappear. The money is providing health care and education to the local women, and supporting the entire community as a whole.

Now that we know where it's from and who
it supports, what does it do?

Berber women have used Argan oil for centuries to protect and nourish their skin, hair and nails from the harsh conditions in which they live. Now Argan oil is gaining popularity as a "miracle ingredient" in the Western beauty product industry. Argan oil contains about 40% oleic acid, which is an omega-9 that makes up most olive oil. It also has a mish-mash of extremely high levels of Vitamin E and 80% fatty acids which make it perfect for healing many skin ailments as well as protecting against premature aging caused by oxidation. Just to name a few:

  • tissue healing (scars)
  • anti-inflammatory
  • sun-protective
  • disinfectant properties
  • anti-oxidants help neutralise free radical damage
  • help reduce wrinkles by restoring the skin`s hydro-lipid layer
  • prevents hair breakage by infusing it with lipids, carbohydrates, amino acids, and vitamin-E
Since we are now educated on what we need to know about Argan oil and all its benefits I believe it's safe to say that every girl needs some Argan in her beauty lifestyle! Whether its in your skin regimens, hair styling products, shampoo & conditioners, your body will be drinking in the wonderful reasons why Agan oil is my number 1 Oil!

Curl without HEAT!

I love this idea for not using a heating tool to curl your hair. As many of us know, acsessive heat can damage and fry, for lack of better words, your hair. Here is a fun alternative way to get the "Taylor Swift" curls!
First,  the night before you want to wear the style make sure your hair is completely dried, then spritz it lightly with water (like 3 sprays). If your hair tends to get frizzy, use a little bit of anti-frizz serum. Then twist sections of your hair up in to the twists and pin into place. Smaller sections make smaller curls, larger sections create bigger curls,  so section the way you want to wear your curl and go with the way you part your hair. It will ensure that your hair dries fast and parted in the right spots. Then allow to form over night while you sleep. In the morning take down the pins and comb with fingers, and you'll probably need s bit of anti-frizz serum. VOILA! Now go all day with bouncy natural looking curls :)
